About Alpha Instruments

We don't make level sensors. We don't make temperature sensors. We make only low differential pressure sensors — and we make the best. Here's the story behind that conviction.

Our Origin Story

Born in an MIT Lab. Proven in the Field.

In 2005, an MIT engineering professor saw a problem that nobody was solving: differential pressure sensors were either accurate and expensive, or affordable and unreliable. There was no middle ground.

Drawing on decades of MEMS and capacitive sensing research, he developed a proprietary sensor element that delivered laboratory-grade accuracy at a price HVAC/R and industrial customers could justify. That sensor became the foundation of Alpha Instruments.

Today, the company holds 18+ US and international patents covering capacitive sensor design, signal conditioning, and temperature compensation algorithms. Every sensor we ship is built on technology we invented — not licensed from someone else.

The Alpha Difference

Six Reasons the World's Most Demanding Engineers Choose Alpha

We don't compete by being cheaper. We compete by being fundamentally different — in our technology, our focus, and how we support our customers.

01 · Specialization

One Measurement. No Distractions.

Most sensor companies: sell pressure, temperature, level, flow, humidity — spread across dozens of product lines.

Alpha: Low differential pressure only. Every dollar of R&D, every engineer, every manufacturing process is optimized for one measurement. When you do one thing for 20+ years, you tend to get very good at it.

02 · Proprietary Technology

We Invented It. We Don't License It.

Most sensor companies: buy generic MEMS elements from third-party suppliers and package them into housings.

Alpha: Designs and manufactures its own proprietary capacitive sensing element — protected by 18+ US and international patents. The core technology inside every Alpha sensor was invented by us, in our lab, from first principles. No off-the-shelf sensor element can match it.

03 · US Design & Quality Control

American Engineering. Global Scale.

Most sensor companies: either manufacture entirely overseas with minimal US oversight, or produce entirely in the US at premium cost.

Alpha: All R&D, engineering design, and final calibration are performed in Acton, Massachusetts. Production at our joint-venture facility in Tianjin, China — combining MIT-level engineering with world-class manufacturing efficiency. You get US quality at competitive global pricing.

04 · Certifications & Quality

Every Sensor Calibrated. Every Shipment Traceable.

Most sensor companies: batch-sample calibrate, or ship without individual calibration certificates.

Alpha: ISO 9001:2015 certified quality system, audited annually. Every sensor is individually NIST-traceable calibrated with a certificate included in the box. CE, RoHS, UL Recognized. We don't just claim quality — we prove it, on every unit.

05 · Engineer-to-Engineer Support

You Talk to an Engineer. Not a Script.

Most sensor companies: route your technical question through a call center, a distributor, and a regional sales rep. You wait days.

Alpha: When you call or email, you get an application engineer who understands pressure measurement at the sensor-physics level. Selection help, installation guidance, troubleshooting — free, for the life of the product. Average response time: under 4 hours during business days.

06 · Value Engineered

Better Accuracy. Fair Price. No Compromises.

Most sensor companies: charge a premium for high accuracy, or deliver low price at the expense of drift and reliability.

Alpha: Our proprietary capacitive technology is inherently simpler than strain-gauge and LVDT approaches — fewer parts, less drift, lower manufacturing cost. That structural advantage translates directly to you: ±0.25% accuracy, 2-year warranty, and a price that makes your budget work. The best engineers don't overpay — they choose the smart architecture.

Our Journey

Two Decades of Pressure Sensing Innovation

2005

Company Founded

Alpha Instruments incorporated in Massachusetts by an MIT engineering professor. Initial R&D focused on a novel capacitive MEMS pressure sensing element — the technology that would become the core of every Alpha product.

2007

First Patent Granted

US Patent issued for the proprietary capacitive sensor design. This patent — and the 17+ that followed — forms the intellectual property foundation that differentiates Alpha from generic sensor manufacturers.

2010

First Product Line: Model 161–165

Commercial launch of the core product range covering 0.1″ to 100″ WC. Immediate adoption by HVAC/R OEMs who had been underserved by expensive industrial sensor brands.

2013

ISO 9001 Certification

Quality management system certified to ISO 9001:2008 (upgraded to 9001:2015 in 2018). NIST-traceable calibration procedures formalized for all production sensors.

2016

Cleanroom & Semiconductor Markets

Model 165 ultra-low range transducer launched — specifically engineered for semiconductor cleanroom pressure cascading. Rapid adoption by major Asian semiconductor fabs.

2020

Global Expansion

Distribution network established across 50+ countries. Products certified CE, RoHS, UL. Explosion-proof Model 170 launched for oil & gas and hazardous location applications.

2025–Present

Next-Generation Sensor Platform

Digital RS485 Modbus RTU output with on-board temperature compensation added across product line. Current R&D focused on IoT-enabled predictive maintenance and wireless sensor integration.

Quality You Can Verify

We Don't Ask You to Take Our Word for It

Every certification below is audited by independent third parties. Every calibration is NIST-traceable. Every certificate ships with the sensor. No exceptions.

ISO 9001:2015

Audited Annually

Quality management system covering design, manufacturing, calibration, and customer support. Certified by an ANAB-accredited registrar — not a self-declaration. Re-audited every year with zero major non-conformities since initial certification.

NIST-Traceable Calibration

Every Sensor. Every Time.

Every sensor we ship is individually calibrated against NIST-traceable pressure standards. A calibration certificate is included in the box — not an extra-charge option. Our calibration lab follows ISO 17025 guidelines for measurement uncertainty.

CE Marking

European Union

All models are CE marked under EMC Directive 2014/30/EU and applicable pressure equipment directives. Declarations of Conformity available for download. Ready for immediate deployment in EU markets.

UL Recognized Component

USA & Canada

Models 161, 162, 164, 165, 166, and 168 bear the UL Recognized Component Mark for US and Canadian markets. Accepted by AHJs, panel builders, and OEM integrators across North America.

RoHS 3 · REACH

Environmental Compliance

All products are RoHS 3 (EU 2015/863) compliant — including the 4 new phthalate restrictions. REACH SVHC declarations available upon request. Full material disclosure for EU, UK, and California Proposition 65.

🛠

ATEX / IECEx

Hazardous Locations

Model 170 certified for Zone 1 / Zone 2 potentially explosive atmospheres under ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU and IECEx Scheme. For oil & gas, chemical processing, and mining applications requiring explosion protection.

Made in USA

Acton, Massachusetts

R&D, engineering design, and final calibration are performed in our Acton, MA facility. Qualifies for Buy American Act and infrastructure projects requiring US-origin instrumentation. Not just assembled — engineered and calibrated in America.
